A Passion for Motorsport That Knows No Boundaries
Leeanne Young’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and family—a narrative that proves age and gender have no barriers in the world of racing. Leeanne, a seasoned speedway racer and tarmac track day competitor, has spent over three decades behind the wheel, bringing a rich history of competition to the track.
Her introduction to racing came in the early 1990s when she joined the Drouin Speedway. Married to a mechanic who had a passion for speedway, it didn’t take long for Leeanne to catch the racing bug herself. Despite facing a fear of dirt roads after surviving a life-changing accident in her early 20s, Leeanne pushed past her fears and dove headfirst into the world of speed, not looking back.
“I love meeting people from all walks of life,” she shares, “The atmosphere of race day and the fun that comes with it is unmatched.” These connections and the excitement of competition have fueled her throughout her career, where she now races not just on the speedway but has also recently ventured into tarmac track days.
Over the years, Leeanne has raced in multiple categories, securing several prestigious wins, including the Victorian State Championship in 1996. But it’s not just the wins that have shaped her career. Leeanne’s enduring commitment to the sport is evident in her recent accomplishments, like her continued success as the reigning Victorian titleholder. Even at over 60, she remains fiercely competitive, always chasing new goals, including her aspiration to defend her title.
Leeanne’s family plays an essential role in her racing journey. Her husband, son, and daughter are all fully qualified mechanics, and they make up her dedicated pit crew. “My pit crew are my family,” Leeanne shares. “They’re always there, supporting me, and it means the world.” Her other daughter also helps on race day, with Leeanne’s seven grandchildren and great-grandson cheering her on from the sidelines. “They think it’s cool to have a Nan that races,” Leeanne laughs.
As the assistant secretary of her drivers’ association, Leeanne has also demonstrated her leadership skills, contributing to the growth of the racing community. Leeanne’s message to aspiring racers is clear: “Start now, no matter your age or experience level. Connect with local racing clubs, find mentors, and set small, achievable goals.”
Despite her extensive experience, Leeanne never stops learning. Whether it’s improving her reaction times or perfecting her driving skills, she is always looking for ways to grow. Her advice is simple: “Keep racing and having fun. It’s about pushing yourself and embracing challenges along the way.”
Leeanne’s journey is a testament to the idea that motorsport belongs to anyone with the drive and passion to succeed. She is an inspiration not just to other women in racing, but to anyone who dreams of pursuing their passion—no matter their age or background.
