Meet Simone Wheeler, Drag Racing Enthusiast
Simone Wheeler’s passion for drag racing didn’t emerge overnight. Growing up as the daughter of a mechanic, she always had a love for cars, but it wasn’t until her forties that she decided to take her passion to the next level. Her journey into racing began with a simple desire: to own a really fast car. With a commitment to safe driving, she chose to bring her need for speed to the drag strip rather than the street. This choice led her to the exhilarating world of drag racing, where she’s found both community and self-growth.
What She Loves About Racing
For Simone, racing is more than just a sport—it’s a release. The drag racing community has become her second family, providing friendships and support that go beyond the track. When she’s behind the wheel, her day-to-day worries melt away, replaced by the thrill of achieving new personal bests and the unmatched adrenaline rush of a perfect pass. Over time, she’s found that the mindset and determination required in racing have helped her grow personally, giving her confidence both on and off the track.
Taking “Blondie” to the Next Level
Simone races in a 2001 VX SS Commodore, lovingly nicknamed “Blondie” for her white exterior and fun, quirky personality. Powered by a custom LS 408 Cast Block with a Proboost 88mm Turbo and a 2-speed Powerglide transmission, Blondie is built for speed. With best times of 8.91 seconds on the quarter mile and 5.73 seconds on the eighth mile, she’s as fierce as she is stylish, sporting custom Tiffany blue accents under the hood and on the wheels. Simone has been taking Blondie to car shows, gaining exposure and surprising fans who might not expect to see a drag car at these events.
The Thrills and Spills of Racing
Simone’s drag racing journey hasn’t been without its hair-raising moments. She recalls one particular scare when her brakes failed at the finish line, forcing her to rely on her parachute to slow down. Despite the danger, she’s undeterred, always eager to get back on the track. For her, fear isn’t a frequent companion—a trait that sometimes worries her partner and mechanic, who know she’s always ready to push her limits.
Her Ultimate Dream
Simone dreams of competing at national-level events like the Winternationals, Kendra, and Jamboree, with the ultimate goal of winning a championship. She’d love to see her hard work and dedication recognised, maybe even landing on the cover of a magazine one day. But most importantly, she wants to inspire young girls to pursue their dreams in motorsports, proving that you don’t need to fit a stereotype to succeed.
Giving Thanks
Simone credits much of her success to her support team. She’s especially grateful to John Ryan at TMS Performance, her partner and Crew Chief Reece, and her crew members Robbo and Demo. With their expertise, encouragement, and plenty of laughs, they make each race possible and memorable.
Advice for Aspiring Racers
Simone’s advice for anyone looking to follow in her footsteps is simple: “Don’t ever let anyone tell you ‘you can’t do it.’” She encourages others to surround themselves with supportive people, be open to learning, and view challenges as fuel for determination.
In the male-dominated world of drag racing, Simone Wheeler stands as a role model—proving that with grit, passion, and a strong support system, anyone can make their mark.
