Profile: Carly Walsh

Sport: Speedway | Activity: Driver

With Carly’s dad and his dad racing, Carly knew it was just a matter of time before she would be sitting behind the wheel of her very own race car. But instead of stepping directly into speedway, at the age of only 9 years old, Carly started racing Go Karts.

10 years later, Carly started racing speedway in the V6 Wingless Sprints and 410 Sprint cars, in her 900 horsepower all pro 410 small block. These are the two most competitive classes in open wheel speedway racing in Australia. In wingless, she’s one of the top 20 drivers in Victoria out of over 150 cars registered in the state.

“I love the adrenaline rush you get, beating the boys and just the overall feeling and satisfaction you get while racing.”

Achieving this level of skill doesn’t come easy though, as Carly travels to race every single weekend from October through to June. With this kind of dedication and the awesome support from family and friends, it’s no surprise that Carly has a dream to race in the 410 Knoxville Nationals in America.

Most people think that a race driver just gets in the car and drives, but not with this supportive family (Mum, Dad, Blake, Chris, Nan, Pop and Mama). Carly “mucks” in with the whole team to make sure her car is setup the best for the conditions before every race, while at the same time focusing her head on the race to come.

Carly has some great advice if you’re thinking of stepping into racing. Come to the race track and talk to the teams, just don’t be afraid to ask.
