Racer Profile: Julia Gordon

A legendary woman living her passion in Speedway Legend Cars

In a world dominated by speed, strategy, and split-second decisions, Julia Gordon stands out, not just for her skill, but for her love of the sport and the family she’s built around it. Racing in Speedway Legend Cars Australia, Julia’s journey is a thrilling testament to passion, persistence, and the power of community.

Her love for motorsport began early, fueled by watching F1 and Supercars with her dad on TV. But like many young dreamers, the reality of affording to race kept her on the sidelines—until her mid-twenties, when a new chapter began. Julia started racing hire karts, met her now-husband, and was soon immersed in the world of speedway karting. That was the start of something bigger—a family, a community, and a shared dream.

Now, Julia races Speedway Legend Cars, an exciting category filled with strict rules that keep the competition focused on skill rather than budgets. These 5/8 scale hot rods, modeled after 1930s and ’40s designs, run Yamaha bike engines, and despite their compact size, they pack a punch. With speeds reaching up to 200 kph on asphalt and 100 kph on speedway, Legend Cars challenge even the most seasoned racers.

“My ‘37 Ford sedan, with a Thor theme, always gets the kids excited,” Julia says with a laugh. “It’s fun, competitive, and keeps everyone on an even playing field.” Legend Cars have captured her heart not only because of the racing itself, but because they’re affordable, fun, and an adrenaline rush like no other.

But Julia’s passion for the sport goes beyond just racing. Alongside her husband, she’s become a key figure in Speedway Legend Cars Australia. As the Queensland representatives, they help manage everything from organising races to running the division’s social media and providing support for other drivers. Julia’s hands are always busy, from fixing cars to ensuring races go off without a hitch.

And it’s not just about the competition. For Julia, it’s the friendships she’s built that matter most. “The friendships and support of those around us is incredible,” she shares. “We’ve met so many amazing people in racing who are now lifelong friends. There’s nothing quite like the bond we all share—on and off the track.”

Julia’s greatest memories in racing include completing a family podium—her husband taking first, her dad second, and Julia in third. recently won the Australian title at Lismore NSW and will be defending it at Bunbury WA in January, an unforgettable experience for the whole family. It’s moments like these that keep her coming back for more—the thrill of the race, the joy of being with loved ones, and the constant challenge to improve.

As a woman in motorsport, Julia has faced her fair share of challenges, but her message to others is simple: “You can actually do it.” She encourages those interested to go to the tracks, talk to drivers, and get involved. “You don’t have to know much to start with—it will all come in time. Be confident in yourself, find people who share your passion, and everything will feel easier.”
